چکیده
Trapping is considered a powerful tool in the monitoring and control of fruit flies high economic importance such as Mediterranean fly, Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae). However, cost trapping and, some cases, safety chemicals used baits are concerning for growers environment. Here we present novel, low cost, environmentally friendly, female-specific bait C. capitata, called Biodelear, that consists mixture attracting compounds us pyrazines, pyranones amorphous nitrogen-based polymers. The new was compared to commercially available attractant Biolure® (Suterra LLC, Bend, OR, USA) Greece. McPhail-type traps were deployed an orange orchard located Athens. Five per treatment several weeks during 2009 four 2010. Traps contained either 17 g Biodelear or one Biolure Unipack dispenser. results showed both highly efficient females, lesser extent, males. Although initially appeared outperform later season two attractants converged efficacy. In years, female captures similar baited with Biodelear. male higher Biodelear-baited addition, seemed be longer lasting than Biolure, despite not being formulated into slow-release dispersion system. its strong, long-lasting effects render it suitable mass fly.

Effective sampling range of a synthetic protein-based attractant for Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae).
Studies were conducted in Honduras to determine effective sampling range of a female-targeted protein-based synthetic attractant for the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae). Multilure traps were baited with ammonium acetate, putrescine, and trimethylamine lures (three-component attractant) and sampled over eight consecutive weeks. Field design consiste...

Symbiosis in fruit flies (Dipt.: Tephritidae), despite its long history of study, is still a relatively poorly understood aspect of the life history of these insect pests (reviewed by Drew and Lloyd 1991; Lauzon 2003). Many tephritid species are uniquely adapted for housing large quantities of bacteria in their digestive tract (the oesophageal bulb in adults and gastric caeca in larvae) and som...

The three most common and most successful methods for controlling fruit-fly pest species (particularly Ceratitis capitata) are the sterile-insect technique, insecticide use, and biological control. Yet while innovative research in the first two have meant significant improvement in the efficiency of these techniques over the past two decades, by comparison, improvements in the efficiency of bio...
